Used and new Zimmermann uprights and grand pianos

Origin & History

Gebr. Zimmermann was founded in 1884 in Leipzig and, by its own account, grew into Europe’s largest piano manufacturer by 1909. C. Bechstein acquired the brand in 1992, production continued in Seifhennersdorf until 2011, and since 2013 Zimmermann instruments have been built under Bechstein’s supervision by Hailun in Ningbo, China.

Positioning

Within the Bechstein group, Zimmermann covers the entry segment, below W. Hoffmann and the core C. Bechstein brand. Despite the low price, Bechstein retains quality control over the Chinese production.

Sound character

As the Bechstein group’s entry brand, Zimmermann delivers a clear, straightforward tone, without the tonal depth the core C. Bechstein brand aims for.

What to check

Zimmermann, W. Hoffmann and C. Bechstein belong to the same group but represent three different price and manufacturing tiers. If you’re after something a bit higher quality, it’s worth looking at the two sister brands too. General buying criteria are covered in the piano buying guide.

Known series

The current generation is sold under the name “Zimmermann by C. Bechstein”, with compact entry models for beginners.
