Origin & History
Grotrian-Steinweg traces back to Heinrich Steinweg's piano workshop from the 1830s. After his emigration, his son Theodor continued the business in Braunschweig and took on Friedrich Grotrian as a partner in the 1850s. The company in this later form went on to trade as Grotrian-Steinweg. In 2015, the Parsons Music Group of Hong Kong acquired a majority stake in the manufactory. The company filed for insolvency in August 2024, and the Braunschweig site closed for good in January 2025. Brand rights now belong entirely to the Parsons Music Group, whose piano production is based in Yichang, China.
Positioning
Until its insolvency, the Braunschweig company was one of the most renowned premium brands alongside Steinway and Bechstein. Since the manufactory only closed for good in 2025, every instrument traded so far comes from that Braunschweig production.

Grotrian-Steinweg uprights and grands are known for a warm, singing tone.
What to check
Alongside the instruments built in Braunschweig, there are the Friedrich Grotrian and Wilhelm Grotrian lines built in China since 2017, with only the Friedrich Grotrian models still assembled in Braunschweig. So find out which line and production location you're actually looking at before buying.
