Origin & History
Mason & Hamlin was founded in 1854 by Henry Mason and Emmons Hamlin in Boston and, alongside Steinway, is one of the few “Golden Age” piano brands still around today. Since 1996 the company has belonged to a group of investors who also own the reproducing-piano maker PianoDisc.
Positioning
Mason & Hamlin now runs three tiers: the Virtuoso X series is still built in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and forms the ultra-premium segment, traditionally owned by professional musicians and institutions. The more affordable Artist and Classic series, by contrast, are built in China.
Sound character
The patented Tension Resonator of the Virtuoso X series keeps the soundboard’s crown stable even in older instruments, giving it a particularly rich, carrying tone. The China-built Artist and Classic models adopt some of the same technology but don’t reach the same tonal depth.
What to check
Not every Mason & Hamlin is built in the US any more: only the Virtuoso X series comes from Haverhill, while the more affordable Artist and Classic series are built in China. Known series
The Virtuoso X series includes the A, B and BB grands and the CC-94 concert grand. The Artist and Classic series offer smaller grands and, unlike the US line, uprights too.
