Used and new Pleyel uprights and grand pianos
Origin & History
Pleyel was founded in 1807 in Paris by Camille Pleyel and is one of the oldest French piano brands. From 1971 to 1994, Schimmel in Germany built Pleyel instruments to French designs. Since 2017 the brand has belonged to the French Algam group, with the P series assembled in Indonesia and the Haute Facture grands built in cooperation with Steingraeber & Söhne in Bayreuth, with final assembly in Thouaré-sur-Loire near Nantes.
Positioning
Pleyel today spans two very different price tiers: the P series is an entry to mid-range offering, while the Haute Facture grands built with Steingraeber sit in the premium segment. Historical pre-1971 Pleyel instruments form their own sought-after category.
Sound character
Historical Pleyel grands, of the kind Chopin himself favored, are known for a particularly delicate, intimate tone. Modern production’s tonal character differs noticeably depending on the manufacturing era.
What to check
With Pleyel it’s worth looking closely at the manufacturing era: pre-war instruments, the 1971 to 1994 Schimmel era, and the current Algam production since 2017 differ significantly in build and value. A nameplate or serial number will tell you which. General buying criteria are covered in the piano buying guide.
Known series
Known models include the compact P112 “Chenonceau” and P170 “Vendôme”, as well as the large Haute Facture concert grands.
