Used and new Steinway & Sons uprights and grand pianos
Origin & History
The original house, Steinway & Sons, was founded in New York in 1853, and the Hamburg branch followed in 1880. Both workshops still build in parallel today, together producing around 2,500 instruments a year. Steinway Musical Instruments has been owned by US investor Paulson & Co. since 2013.
Positioning
Steinway is considered the reference brand worldwide in the ultra-premium segment, and many concert pianists prefer it. Buyers in Europe often go for the Hamburg grand, though the manufacturer says the tonal difference from its New York sister workshop is small, and up to 1906 Hamburg parts even came from New York.
Sound character
The signature “Steinway sound” is warm, full and exceptionally singing across the whole range, the result of the patented diaphragmatic soundboard construction.
What to check
Always check whether a used Steinway is a Hamburg or a New York instrument, both workshops sell under the same name but appeal to different buyers. For very old instruments, also check the restoration condition. More on this in the piano buying guide.
Known series
Well-known models include the compact Model O grand, the mid-sized Model M/B, the Model D concert grand, and the Model K-52 upright.
