Used and new August Förster uprights and grand pianos

Origin & History

August Förster was founded in 1859 in Löbau, Saxony, and has been back in family ownership since 1991. Production has always stayed in Löbau, with no manufacturing abroad.

Positioning

August Förster sits in the premium to upper mid-range segment, overshadowed by better-known names like Bechstein or Steinway but valued by connoisseurs for its sound quality.

Sound character

August Förster is known for a warm, singing tone, especially in the bass register, which is why some concert pianists rate the brand highly despite its low profile.

What to check

Because there’s only one factory and no sub-brands, tracing origin is straightforward. For instruments from the East German era, when the workshop operated as VEB Flügel- und Pianobau Löbau (1972 to 1991), check for differences in quality and features compared to today’s family-run production. General buying criteria are covered in the piano buying guide.

Known series

Known models include the 116 and 125 uprights and the 170, 190 and 215 grand pianos.
