Used and new Boston uprights and grand pianos

Origin & History

Boston was launched in 1992 by Steinway & Sons in New York as its own brand. The design comes from New York, but instruments are built by Kawai in Japan and Indonesia. Boston belongs to the Steinway group, owned by US investor John Paulson since 2013.

Positioning

Boston is deliberately positioned as an entry point into the Steinway world, in the mid-range between the more affordable Essex brand and premium Steinway & Sons.

Sound character

Because Boston was developed to Steinway’s own acoustic specifications, it sounds warmer and more singing than most instruments in its price class, without quite reaching the Steinway sound.

What to check

Keep in mind when judging the price that a Boston isn’t a Steinway itself. Since 2009 the technically revised Performance Edition, with its patented Octagrip pinblock, has replaced the earlier Boston models. More in the piano buying guide.

Known series

The Performance Edition has been the current model generation with revised technology since 2009.
