Used and new Yamaha uprights and grand pianos
Origin & History
Yamaha has built pianos since the early 20th century, with its main works in Hamamatsu, Japan. Today Yamaha is the world’s largest piano manufacturer with several production sites, including Japan and Indonesia.
Positioning
Yamaha positions itself in the mid to upper mid-range and is widely seen as the de facto standard on the used market: solid build quality, good parts availability and a huge supply make it the most common choice among used pianos.
Sound character
Yamaha is known for a bright, clear and highly consistent sound across its entire range, a deliberate contrast to the warmer, rounder tone of many German heritage brands.
What to check
The popular U1 and U3 models continue to be built in Hamamatsu, Japan, while the cheaper B series comes from Indonesia. “Yamaha” alone doesn’t tell you the country of manufacture, so check the model name and origin on the fallboard. General buying criteria are covered in the piano buying guide.
Known series
The U series (U1, U3) from Japan is considered a classic among used pianos, while the B series from Indonesia is the more affordable alternative.
