Used and new Petrof uprights and grand pianos

Origin & History

Petrof was founded in 1864 by Antonín Petrof in Hradec Králové, in what’s now the Czech Republic. After nationalization in 1947, the company returned to family ownership in 1991 and is now run by the fifth and sixth generations, currently two sisters from the fifth generation.

Positioning

With around 5,000 uprights and 900 grands a year, Petrof is one of Europe’s largest independent piano makers and sits in the mid-range to premium segment.

Sound character

Petrof instruments are known for a warm, romantic tone, shaped by over 160 years of unbroken family production in Hradec Králové.

What to check

Petrof builds entirely in Hradec Králové with no sub-brands or manufacturing abroad, so origin isn’t a concern. For very cheap private listings, though, it’s worth checking condition carefully, as maintenance and tuning history vary a lot. General buying criteria are covered in the piano buying guide.

Known series

Known models include the compact P 118 and P 125 uprights and the P 173 Breeze, P 210 Pasat and P 284 Mistral concert grand.
