Origin & History
Carl Bechstein founded the company in Berlin in 1853. Today C. Bechstein Pianoforte AG is an independent, publicly listed group that also owns the brands Zimmermann and W. Hoffmann, both of which have their own brand page here too.
Positioning
C. Bechstein forms the premium segment of the group, alongside the “Bechstein Academy” line, an institutional, somewhat more affordable variant within the core brand. Zimmermann covers the entry segment and W. Hoffmann the mid-range, so all three brands can be compared directly across their price tiers.
Sound character
C. Bechstein stands for a bright, clear and singing tone, especially in the treble, once favored by Debussy and Ravel, setting it apart from the warmer, darker sound of some competitors.
