Buy Blüthner
Used and new Blüthner uprights and grand pianos
Origin & History
Blüthner was founded in 1853 in Leipzig and remains an independent, fifth-generation family business to this day. Production has been based in Störmthal near Leipzig since the mid-1990s, with no manufacturing abroad.
Positioning
Blüthner is one of the classic European premium to ultra-premium brands for concert grands, particularly known for its patented Aliquot resonance-string system.
Sound character
The signature sound comes from the patented Aliquot system, a fourth, unstruck resonance string per note, which gives the instrument a warm, silvery shimmer in its decay.
What to check
The Aliquot system isn’t present on every model or build year. If that particular sound is what draws you in, ask the seller specifically. General buying criteria are covered in the piano buying guide.
Known series
Known models include the large Model 1 concert grand and the Model A upright.
